5.8.2005 Kaizers Orchestra (Haldern Pop, Haldern)

Friday, August 5th, 2005

Everybody says that Haldern is the nicest and most familial festival in Germany. I must admit that until now, the lineup never really convinced me, but this was different this year of course. And after my very bad experience with this year’s Southside festival I really couldn’t wait for Haldern – great bands, muuuuuuch smaller and in the middle of summer, so not as freezing cold as Southside. Ha ha ha… great bands and much smaller, yes, that was true, and I guess it also was one or two degrees warmer. But to make up for that, it was raining almost constantly – and I’ve never seen so much mud in one place (and yes, I’ve been to St. Gallen and yes, I was at Taubertal Festival in 2004 *g*). Which, by the way, is the reason there are no concert pictures this time – it did actually stop raining during the Kaizers show, but for one it was impossible to predict that and also, my camera would have ended up in the mud at some point in time anyway. =;-)

The second Kaizers show in France – but this time, it was only about an hour away from the German border. And even though I had sworn myself only three weeks earlier to NEVER go to a big festival again, I had to be there, of course. Which was actually a good thing, ’cause now I might think about this decision once again – it really IS possible to organize a festival of that size in such a way that even the visitors can have fun. The organizers of Southside festival should take a good look at Eurockéennes and learn from that…

I’ve known Kaizers for a little over a year now – and of course I had to see the last concert before the break. Even though – or maybe because? – it took place in the Rockefeller in Oslo!

As already mentioned, and extremely refreshing night in the car… then we spent the whole morning looking for a place to take a shower – what kind of resting places are those stops at Dutch motorways, where they don’t have showers? *grmbl* Well, finally we were “successful”, only cold water though, but well, at least it was wet and refreshing… *g* After that, a terrible lunch at Quick (whoever tells me again that Quick is the Belgian equivalent of Burger King, better prepare for something! Woah, that was really uneatable… *shiver*) and a year’s supply of Belgian chocolate from the supermarket, and then we were ready to get to Pukkelpop, one of the biggest Belgian festivals.

And finally back on the road – only one more time, and then there’s not gonna be any concerts for a whole year! *shiver* The first concert this time took place in Utrecht (near Amsterdam). 400 km, after that totally chaotic one way streets, but a Kaizers club gig is worth all the trouble… =;-)
